Fenoglio named the character after a famous medieval prince.The Black Prince has skin that is said to be as dark as his bear's fur. The Black Prince is both loyal and faithful, traits his bear shares. The Black Prince was poisoned by Mortola and almost died. He was once captured by the Adderhead as a prisoner, but Dustfinger set him and others free. The Black Prince then helped Dustfinger, Farid, and Meggie Folchart to free the other prisoners. The Black Prince and his bear were captured, but later freed by Dustfinger, with Farid as a distraction.
After Mortimer Folchart was shot, the Black Prince met Resa in the Secret Camp during Mo's recovery.
People thought his bear was a Night-Mare or a man under a spell set by the fairies, but the bear was simply grateful to the Black Prince because he'd saved him from his previous owner, who forced him to do tricks for money. He carried daggers even though strolling players were not really allowed to have weapons. He has a tame bear as a companion they can mostly be seen together everywhere, and was revealed to be the best friend of Dustfinger, having grown up with him.
